INFORMATION ABOUT THE TOEFL

The purpose of the Test of English as a Foreign Language is to evaluate the English proficiency of persons whose native language is not English. Most colleges and universities in the United States and Canada use a TOEFL score as part of the admission process for foreign students.

Form of the TOEFL

The questions in the TOEFL are in multiple choice format. Each question has four options, (A), (B), (C) and (D); you must choose the correct one and fill in the corresponding oval on your answer sheet. The TOEFL is given in one session of approximately 3 hours, including the time for examinees to be admitted. It consists of three sections: (1) Listening Comprehension; (2) Structure and Written Expression; (3) Vocabulary and Reading Comprehension.

Section 1: Listening Comprehension

"The questions in this section test your understanding of spoken North American
English. The statements and conversations contain combinations of sounds and words that are often difficult for non-native speakers. This section consists of three parts: A, B and C. In Part A, you hear 20 statements. For each statement you read four sentences in your test book. Then you must choose the statement which is closest in meaning to the statement you heard. The incorrect choices will contain words or sounds similar to the one you hear but do not have the same meaning.

In Part B, you hear 15 short conversations. These are short dialogues between two people at the end of which a third voice asks a question about the conversation. You then choose the correct answer from one of the four choices in your test book.

In Part C, you hear a short talk or lecture and a long conversation. There are approximately 3-5 questions after each talk or conversation you hear. For each question you must choose the correct answer from one of the four choices in your test book. The total number of questions in Part C is 15. The talks are about a variety of subjects that you might encounter in a college or university setting. They do not contain specialized information that may give an advantage to individuals in specific fields of study.

Section II: Structure and Written Expression

This section tests important areas of grammar used in standard written English. There are 40 questions in this section which are of two types. The first 15 questions are incomplete sentences. There is a blank space in each sentence. To complete the sentence four words or phrases are given, and you must choose the word or phrase that best completes the sentence both in meaning and grammatically. The remainder of this section consists of 25 sentences, each of which has four parts underlined and labelled A, B, C, and D. You must choose the one underlined word or phrase which is incorrect.

Section III: Vocabulary and Reading Comprehension

section contains 60 questions which are divided into two parts. The first 30 questions test your knowledge of English vocabulary. A sentence is given with a word or words underlined, Below each sentence four words or groups of words are given. You must select the word or group of words that keeps the meaning of the original sentence when it is substituted for the word underlined. The words underlined will include verbs, nouns, adjectives and adverbs.

The last 30 questions are based on several reading passages. These reading passages come from non-fiction texts, magazines or brochures that you might read in a college or university. The questions are about the main ideas of the passages and the inferences that can be made. The questions in this section do not require prior knowledge of the subject matter and can be answered by reading the passage carefully.
